What Are Core Web Vitals? LCP, FID and CLS Optimization Guide
Understand Core Web Vitals metrics (LCP, FID, CLS) and apply metric-specific optimization steps to improve your Google ranking score.

Since 2021, Google has used page experience signals as a ranking factor, and Core Web Vitals sit at the center of these signals. LCP, INP (replacing FID), and CLS metrics measure your site's real user experience. This guide covers what each metric means, how to measure them, and concrete optimization steps.
What Are Core Web Vitals?
Core Web Vitals are three key metrics Google uses to evaluate web page user experience. These metrics are based on real user data (CrUX — Chrome User Experience Report) and reported in Google Search Console. As of 2024, FID has been replaced by INP (Interaction to Next Paint), which measures responsiveness across all interactions.
💡 Tip: The Core Web Vitals report in Google Search Console shows real user data. PageSpeed Insights provides both lab and field data. Prioritize your optimizations based on field data.
LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) Optimization
LCP measures how long it takes for the largest content element (usually a hero image or heading text) to become visible. A good score is under 2.5 seconds. Four main factors affect LCP: server response time (TTFB), resource load delay, resource load duration, and client-side render delay.
| Metric | Good | Needs Improvement | Poor |
|---|---|---|---|
| LCP | ≤ 2.5s | 2.5 – 4.0s | > 4.0s |
| INP | ≤ 200ms | 200 – 500ms | > 500ms |
| CLS | ≤ 0.1 | 0.1 – 0.25 | > 0.25 |
To reduce TTFB, use a CDN and enable server-side caching. Use fetchpriority="high" and preload for hero images. Minimize render-blocking CSS and JavaScript — inline critical CSS and load the rest asynchronously.
⚠️ Important: Do not use lazy loading on the LCP element — it negatively impacts the metric. Use loading="eager" for above-the-fold images or omit the loading attribute entirely.
INP (Interaction to Next Paint) Optimization
INP measures how quickly the browser produces a visual update after user interaction (click, tap, keyboard). Under 200 milliseconds is considered good. Long-running JavaScript tasks are INP's biggest enemy. Break up long tasks using requestIdleCallback or scheduler.yield(). Defer third-party scripts to reduce main thread load. Our JavaScript performance optimization guide covers this in detail.
CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) Optimization
CLS measures unexpected content shifts during page load. Under 0.1 is good. Unsized images, late-loading ads, and dynamically injected content are the main causes. Add width and height attributes to all images and videos. Use CSS aspect-ratio for responsive images. Use font-display: swap to minimize font-loading layout shifts.
Measurement Tools

Frequently Asked Questions
How much do Core Web Vitals affect SEO rankings?
Core Web Vitals are one of hundreds of Google ranking factors. Content quality and backlinks still carry more weight. However, between two pages with similar content quality, Core Web Vitals can make the difference.
Does hosting choice affect Core Web Vitals?
Yes, especially the LCP metric. Server response time (TTFB) is the first component of LCP. Fast hosting infrastructure and proper server location reduce TTFB and improve LCP.
Is INP replacing FID?
Yes, as of March 2024, INP officially replaced FID. INP evaluates all page interactions rather than just the first one, providing a more comprehensive responsiveness metric.
